QUESTION:
I have a split face colored block on my building and it has dark spots and white stains running down the wall. What is this? How can I clean? Will it come back?

SOLUTION:
What you have described sounds like your wall is taking on a lot of moisture. Picture 1 above shows a wall that has a moisture problem. The white is lime that is being pulled out of the block and mortar. The lime then dries on the surface. This is a very stubborn stain and should be removed immediately because the longer you wait the harder it is to remove.

The recommended cleaning product is Custom Masonry Cleaner by PROSOCO. A dilution rate of 1 part cleaner to 4 parts water was used to clean the wall in the picture 2. In the heavily stained areas, several applications will be needed. Use per mfg. recommendations and always do a small test area.

If the wall is not properly treated with a water repellant, the staining will reappear. The recommended product is Custom Masonry Sealer by PROSOCO. This product will repel water and also graffiti while also enhancing the color of the wall. The wall in the picture 2 was sealed with this product.
